The CDC has new guidelines for COVID – what does that mean for healthcare workers?

Additional CDC guidelines every medical practitioner should understand

The Center for Disease Control established new guidelines for handling COVID-19

The pressure caused by COVID-19 has been nothing short of immense. More so on the already strained US healthcare system, which was barraged on an unprecedented level by explosive Coronavirus cases and limited medical resources. To counter this, initial guidelines called for distancing, protective masks, and vaccinations to reduce the spread of COVID, or in case of contracting it, mitigate symptoms.

While COVID still presents a concern, those affected by it but immunized deal with vastly weaker symptoms and dramatically reduce the risk of hospitalization and death. However, despite efforts by health officials and public education, the fight against Coronavirus has been nothing short of an uphill slog.

Healthcare professionals know this all too well, as every sector of medical care was (and is) impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. But now, with the CDC revising guidelines, the future may present a grave precedent: COVID could be here to stay. In other words, instead of eliminating Coronavirus for the foreseeable future, professionals will instead face down routine cases of COVID.

Complications

Dragon Medical One has long discussed the various problems and stress factors facing medical professionals daily, with COVID being no exception. Now, with a potentially routine flood of cases during peak periods (seasonal, holiday, and events putting people in proximity), once again the healthcare system may face hardship.

The complications can thus manifest a vicious cycle. Overburdened medical systems, hospitals, staff, and/or practices create shortages, and those shortages create additional burdens, and so on. Attending emergency scenarios means doctors and professionals have less time in general, and that’s to say nothing of the onerous paperwork involved in COVID-related patient care.

It’s possible, essentially, that a scenario of a COVID-laden world scrapes away what little time medical providers had. In turn, this can lead to burnout and other serious fault lines in the healthcare sector. It’s an unpleasant prospect, but unless a hardened philosophy of precautions is taken amongst the general public (and by that, those who still have “doubts” about the efficacy of vaccines) the Coronavirus could be a mainstay of life. And, of so, given an abundance of opportunities and victims, it could continuously mutate into other strains and variants.

It’s worth noting, such a normalization of a pandemic is not usual, nor are the circumstances surrounding its response. Facing these challenges, what options do healthcare workers have?
